Christmas Special Offering 2021
Dear Plymouth Members,
As you prepare to celebrate Christmas, please consider a Special Offering gift that supports our Just Peace covenant – working toward economic and/or social justice for our Des Moines Metro Area neighbors. Additionally, the Marlon Laverman Benevolences Fund will provide dollar for dollar match to the initiatives providing services for at-risk children and families with at-risk children.
The projects selected for this year’s gifts are:
Des Moines Refugee Support’s (DMRS) Success Through Soccer
This non-profit is run 100% by teachers volunteering time. This gift will go toward transportation costs to take the children to and from soccer activities and summer soccer camps.
Young Women’s Resource Center’s (YWRC) Empowering Girls and Young Women
This program serves girls from 5th through 12th grades to counteract trauma and build coping skills, confidence and self-esteem.
EMBARC for the benefit of Johnston Parents for Equity and Anti-Racism (J-PEAR)
This initiative works with parents concerned about racial equity, lack of inclusion, and negative experience with children of color. Formed in the summer of 2020, this group hopes to bring together parents across school districts to “leverage shared power” and provide training so parents may support their children by ensuring equity and inclusion in their schools.
Children and Families of Iowa’s (CFI) Domestic Violence Services
This gift will support transportation costs to families served by CFI’s Des Moines Domestic Violence Services. Transportation needs include getting to employment, health care, and ensuring obtaining basic needs. The funds support operation of the shelter’s van, bus tokens, and cab vouchers.
Plymouth’s Good Samaritan Fund
This provides emergency funds to community members in need for expenses such as rent, utility bills, medical and medicine, and bus/travel expense.
