Aug. 10: Special Guest in Forum

Join us on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. in Forum for a presentation from Dr. Katy Swalwell on “(Re)Present: Racism & Resistance in Iowa.”

In 2022, the Iowa legislature passed a law banning public educators from teaching students that the U.S. or the state of Iowa is systemically racist. Given that there is a long history of systemic racism in Iowa, why would they do this? Who benefits from ignorance about this history? Why is it so important for young people to learn about it? And, what resources exist to help them? Explore these questions with Dr. Katy Swalwell, co-founder of Past Present Future Publishing, a company dedicated to creating books for young people that lift up history from the margins in Iowa. Dive into highlights from their latest title “(Re)Present: Racism & Resistance in Iowa”and reflect on how we can support high quality history education for the next generation.
