Projects selected for this year’s gifts are:

Good Samaritan Fund (10%):
The Pastor’s discretionary fund provides for urgent, usually emergency funds for community members, covering costs such as rent assistance, utility bills, medical and medicine, and bus/travel expense.

The remainder of the Easter collection will be equally divided and matched by the Marlon Laverman Memorial Funds (serving at-risk children) between the following initiatives:

8th and College Connections:
Through English classes, a community garden, and other programs and collaborations, 8th and College Connections brings together immigrant neighbors and other community members, in order to build friendships and community. Plymouth funds will be used to support their English classes. Most students who attend their English classes are unable to participate in other programs because of their unpredictable or inflexible work schedules, their children cannot be left at home, or because they have arrived here needing to learn English but other programs are already in session. They welcome these students, help them and their children find a community and learn some English, and show a loving side of our community that they may not find elsewhere. Learn more here.

Building Lives through Reading:
Plymouth funds will be used to purchase books from Scholastic for DMPS elementary students. These personalized books are for many students the very first books that they can call their own. They believe if we can enhance the students' reading enjoyment, they will be more apt to apply those reading skills to school work. Students must "learn to read" before they can "read to learn”. Learn more here.

Capital City Pride:
In a time when many LGBTQ+ families in Iowa are navigating uncertainty, Capital City Pride’s Rainbow Safari offers something simple but powerful: a chance to gather in joy, build friendships, and create positive memories together. The Rainbow Safari brings together hundreds of LGBTQ+ families, friends, and allies for a joyful, family-centered day of connection and community. For many parents and caregivers, Rainbow Safari is one of the few large-scale community events where their families are visibly affirmed and surrounded by others who share similar experiences. Plymouth funds will be used to expand access and strengthen a sense of belonging for families across Greater Des Moines. Learn more here.
