Nov. 8: Artists Invited to Participate in Lenten Visio Divina Gallery Exhibit

Artists are invited to participate in a Plymouth Gallery exhibit that will be on display through Lent in 2027!

The Plymouth Gallery Committee periodically hosts collaborative art exhibits for the Plymouth Gallery, and our next exhibit will take place beginning in early February and ending April 3. The theme for the exhibit is “A Life of Prayer Through Visio Divina.”

Visio Divina translates from Latin as "divine seeing" or "sacred seeing" and refers to a contemplative prayer practice that uses images, icons, art, or nature to connect with God or a sense of spiritual awakening. Through contemplation of physical objects or works of art, the viewer slows down, looks with love, and meets God or spirituality with singular attention. Visio Divina invites the viewer to set aside matters of the world and focus fully on conversations with God or a personal spiritual connectedness. The visual representations of the Stations of the Cross were initially created as an early form of prayerful focus, or visio divina, as one traveled, through images, with Christ to his death and resurrection.

Plymouth Church invites you to be part of a collaborative art exhibit that explores the world of prayer, spiritual awakening, and visio divina. Your works of art will be exhibited during the season of Lent, from Ash Wednesday until Easter. Artists are free to interpret this theme as they wish, from quite literal to abstract or nonrepresentational.

Included in this invitation are some on-line sources regarding Visio Divina, and I invite you to explore more content available online. In addition, my library of books related to Christian art, iconography, and spirituality are available for your perusal.

Specifics regarding the exhibit include the following.

  • All works must be two-dimensional or shallow relief. Artists may choose the media.

  • If artists need financial assistance purchasing materials, a limited amount of funds are available.

  • You may choose the dimensions of your work.

  • Artists are asked to submit by January 10, a brief biography and, if desired, a brief commentary on the work presented.

  • Your work of art is yours to keep after the exhibit. If we receive a request to show this exhibit in another location, we will ask if your work is available for loan.

  • Artwork is to be delivered no later than February 1. Make sure your artwork is dry and ready to hang when it is delivered. Please attach hanging hardware before you deliver your work. Wire is preferred. Please, no wet paint!

Please contact me before Sunday, November 8 if you are interested in participating in this exhibit. If you know of another artist who would be interested in exhibiting, please share this information with them and contact me, as well. I look forward to hearing from you!
