About Saturday Sketchers

In 1948 a group of Des Moines artists decided to gather on Saturday afternoons to draw and paint en plein air, sharing comeraderie and encouragement.  The group was all male. In 1968 when women were allowed to join, half the men quit.  But the group continued and carries on today, with no bylaws, no club officers, no meetings.  Our group includes well-known local artists, a professor emeritus, retired attorneys and creative directors. Our art experience ranges from enthusiastic amateurs to experienced professionals to rank beginners. Approximately 20 artists are included in a weekly email, and any given Saturday will find 8-15 of us gathering at Greenwood Park to decide where to paint that day.
